After escaping from an island prison where he spent 14 years after being falsely accused of treason, Edmond Dantès returns as the Count of Monte Cristo to take revenge on the men who betrayed him. The budget was estimated at 42.9 million euros. The Count of Monte Cristo is the most expensive French film of 2024. When Albert watches Hyde sing and play the guitar, it is very obvious that he is not even touching the strings half the time.. Introducing La grande semaine: Episode #1.13 (2024). I don’t deny, I think the film is really beautiful: the production design, the costumes, the props… and of course the lighting (congratulations M. Bolduc) and many other details made it a wonderful experience for the eyes in my opinion. Now that the plot is as huge as in Dumas’ case, with so many characters, ideas, subplots and so on, the creators had to cut things, adapt, rewrite… betray, as is often necessary or critical with any adaptation! It goes without saying. But why dishonor the original author’s choices (Dumas)? Why betray the lessons he wanted to impart: Monte Cristo’s moral dilemma, his good nature. overall, his help to so many and his unparalleled loyalty to all who have been good to him or deserved it in any way? Why change Haydée’s love for him from a silly romance? Even Mercedes' The book has an admirable understanding of Monte Cristo’s actions and why he cannot be saved and why Albert must follow him…And what are we left with? Pure show? I can assure you that is not what is left when you read it.
