[telepathically] Eugene Allerton: I’m not queer
Plot
In 1950s Mexico City, an American expat in his late forties leads a secluded life in a small American community. However, the arrival of a young student prompts the man to finally form a meaningful relationship with someone.. It was Daniel Craig who eventually convinced Luca Guadagnino to hire Drew Starkey after watching the audition tapes with Guadagnino and telling him ‘This' ; is the man" after seeing Starkey’s.. Lee… I’m not weird William Lee: I know I’m bodiless. Once again he greeted from the dark.
Luca Guadagnino is one such director
Some directors have earned the benefit of the doubt to such an extent that every film they release is worthy of attention. He first caught my attention with the movie JA SAM LJUBAV (2009) and then followed it with interesting movies like A BIGGER SPLASH (2015), CALL ME BY YOUR NAME (2017), SUSPIRIA (2018), BONES AND ALL (2022). ), and CHALLENGERS, his first film, released in 2024. This time he and CHALLENGERS screenwriter Justin Kuritzkesa take the novella by William C. Burroughs since 1985. “Queer,” which is a tie-in to his 1953 novel.
Daniel Craig plays William Lee
“Junkies”. Dealing with the writing of William S. Burroughs is challenging enough as a reader, much less as a filmmaker. If you are familiar with Burroughs' when you write, then you are aware that the character of William Lee shares many of the same personal traits as Burroughs himself. He is a homosexual who drinks too much, takes hard drugs and is quite promiscuous sexually. The movie opens with Chapter 1: How do you like Mexico?
One night of passion between Lea and Eugene leads to another chapter: Companions
Lee spends his time drinking non-stop and drinking for his next roll in the proverbial haystack. He has several ex-boyfriends, including Joe Guidry (Jason Schwartzman), but a cool cat catches his eye. Eugene Allerton (Drew Starkey) is a young ex-soldier and Lee quickly falls in love. The two go out together, although Lee is never sure if Eugene is gay or not because he spends most of his time playing chess with his girlfriend Marie (Andra Ursula). The two men head to South America as their uneasy relationship (and arrangement) leads to more drinking. Chapter 3: The Jungle Botanist is certainly one of the weirdest segments of any movie this year, as the men set off deep into the jungle to contact a doctor who has been researching some 'vegetation' this might solve Lee’s fascination/obsession with telepathy.
It will hit theaters on December 6, 2024
There’s no viable description for this segment, but kudos to anyone who recognizes Leslie Manville – the one who has a pet sloth and keeps a snake for home security. The epilogue picks up two years later, and here Lee’s long struggle with loneliness becomes most apparent. His time with Eugene provides a home for a real, lasting relationship with something that isn’t a bottle of tequila or a heroin needle. Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey are excellent here and either could win an award. If you were previously exposed to Mr. Craig through the James Bond films, this role may come as a bit of a surprise to you, but those who have followed his career know.
