Spanning four tumultuous decades during The Troubles in Northern Ireland
The real-life Dolores Price was married for two decades (1983-2003) to Irish actor Stephen Rea. During this period, Rea appeared in the film for which she is perhaps best known in the United States: the 1992 romantic thriller The Crying Game. In that film, Rea played Fergus, a highly reluctant and ambiguous member of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) – the same organization with which Price was involved for many years. The book Say Nothing is an excellent and unbiased examination of the cause and its cost. The series follows the book very closely and communicates the main themes and tragic lessons of this brutal period of occupation.
The details of the people and places are fantastic
The show is a work of art, dully made and well crafted. The acting and casting choices capture the essence of the people the series is about. It manages to inform as well as entertain and tell a story that has rarely been told. One can admire the production values of each episode and the historicity of the production. Little things like the brand of cigarettes or the way the fish and chips are served, combined with a certain character grabbing an Armalite AR18 were really nice touches.
She comes across as very likeable
Dolours True Price was known to be funny and charming and this shines through. Many of the characters are very likeable, even the ones you think shouldn’t be. It’s a very human story, humanely told. It helps someone outside the conflict to understand the motivations of why someone would take up arms against another. It wasn’t really about Catholics versus Protestants.
There were immigrants fighting for a free and united Ireland
It was just an arbitrary line that was drawn to divide the working class and working poor people of Ireland and pit them against each other. There was also a comment from another review about immigrants invading Ireland. It was never about how your last name is spelled or which church to pray in. It was about poor people fighting for equal rights and freedom, and that’s the theme of this story and the price paid for that fight. To compare the influx of immigrants from troubled lands to Oliver Cromwell is to dishonor the names of those who suffered and sacrificed.

The moment we turn against those who seek refuge or deny them comfort, we will be no better than those who mocked and ridiculed our ancestors who left Ireland and went to other countries like America, where the Irish were also not welcome.
