Plot

It follows Rupert Campbell-Black and Tony Baddingham as they have a long-running rivalry come to a head.

The same filming location was also used to depict Trenwith House in the 2015 BBC television adaptation of Poldark

So obviously I read the book ages ago (it was like a coming-of-age ritual in a certain time and place) and TBH I remembered very little about it other than the odd name (why some were coined by Jilly so de rigueur – Rupert Campbell Black says it all – and it somehow passed into the lexicon), but almost immediately I began to, if not remember the plot wholesale, then have a synaptic click with the heady scent of YSL Opium while watching The Rivals.

This adaptation (one episode) seems to have it all figured out

It’s silly laughs rather than laugh out loud and cheeky rather than salacious.

and the socio-political commentary, while not thrown in your face, is much clearer than when you read the books

He built the world quickly: the 1980s, the greedy old Thatcherite boys and the yuppies, the bored wives and the fearsome warrior women, all treated like meat no matter what they do, the concord, the cigars and the birdsong, the layers of the English class, the UK in a globalised world trying to hammer nails at the top…

OK, it’s a bit of a pantomime in your underwear, but for God’s sake, why not?!

Maybe it’s because I’m older and have met more people that Cooper’s critique of British culture is more obvious, but I think the casting, the accents, the costumes are too, revealing each character’s habitus (to quote Bordeau) and presenting it to the audience for consideration, admiration, vilification and/or titillation.
